In 1998 John started studying Hellinger Family Constellations / Trans-Generational Healing in The Netherlands, where he lived for 11 years. Since then he has worked with  Gabrielle Borkan, Bertold Ulsamer, Drindy Keller, Ursula Franke and Bert Hellinger. John has become one of the first non-psychotherapists to be accredited by the Bert Hellinger Institute (IAG) in Germany to practice this deeply transformative work. Coupled with his empathic abilities and keen interest in ancestral work, John has become one of the most skilful and respected practitioners of Family Constellation work in the world, having run over 160 workshops on five continents, blending psychotherapeutic process, soul healing and echoes of shamanism into his work.

John is regular guest on South African television and radio and is an established and acknowledged public speaker in that country. Dear Amelia, 

Since you are sponsoring John Payne for a workshop in San Diego in a few weeks, I thought I’d tell you about the amazing experience I had with him and 15 other people this past weekend. Feel free to pass it along if you think others would be interested to hear about it. 

As you know, I was scheduled to go to Denver this weekend and I even got as far as Charlotte, NC but missed my connecting flight. Six-and-a-half hours later, through the most amazing sequence of events, I wound up at John’s trans-generational healing/family constellations workshop in Manhattan. I’ve done just about every form of healing process possible: talk therapy, energy healing, massage, acupuncture, core energetics, beating pillows, spiritual workshops, intuitive counselling, journaling, meditation, prayer and much more. Each of these modalities serves a purpose, but the work I did this weekend brought me to a completely new understanding of myself by helping to tie my sometimes vague/hidden emotions and current life situation into tangible events in my family’s history. Upon acknowledging these events, John then took me through a process of resolving my role (and sometimes lack of legitimate role) in my family’s history. The net effect to me is that through the clarity of understanding my family history I can consciously decouple or release myself from it and make new choices that work for my greatest good. 

I found John to be very gentle and direct at the same time. He has a great gift for getting right to the heart of any situation and he delivers necessary information with honesty and integrity. What really struck me was John’s “egolessness”. He was there to be of service to us, not for his own ego gratification. 

This may sound pretty abstract, so let me give you some mechanics about what happened in our workshop and therefore what you might expect in your workshop, although I’m sure each workshop has its own flavor and circumstances. John touched briefly on the work that he does and laid down a few ground rules to ensure the integrity of the process and safety of participants. We were assembled in a semi-circle around the room and each of us would volunteer to work with John one-on-one when we were ready. John asked what we wanted to work on and about our family of origin. He would then focus on some aspect of our family lineage and we’d be instructed to select other workshop individuals to represent a few key family members. We would then place these “family members”, including a surrogate for ourselves, in a configuration that felt right to us in the center of the room. We would then sit back down and observe the family dynamic that would unfold. Amazingly, each individual would take on the emotions and feelings of their assigned person. It sounds so odd, but the process bore this out each and every time. 

John’s intuitive sense would help to laser-focus on what was needed for the individual’s healing. He’d ask questions of each “family member” and occasionally bring in additional participants to be part of the constellation. Ultimately he would bring back in the person whose family this was and he’d guide him/her through a healing process with his/her family. Each and every constellation became an opportunity for everyone’s healing too. The act of participating in the constellations helps us to heal those aspects in ourselves as well. It really is an incredibly efficient form of healing unlike anything I have ever experienced! 

John makes sure that we take plenty of breaks to clear out the energies and let people decompress/integrate. I thought I would be a lot more tired at the end of each day, but found myself invigorated.
